How this screen works
Is a stock on this list certified halal?
No. This is a screen, not a certification or a fatwa. It applies a business-activity exclusion list and the standard one-third caps on debt and cash relative to market capitalisation. It does not replace a scholar, a certifying body, or your own judgement.
Which checks can you not run?
Two of the standard screens. We cannot measure non-permissible income (interest received, late-payment penalties) as a share of revenue, because no data source we use breaks that out. We also do not carry accounts receivable, so the receivables-to-market-cap screen is not applied. A stock passing here could still fail either of those.
Why are some stocks marked unrated rather than passing or failing?
Because we would be guessing. If a company has no sector on file, or the statistics feed has not yet returned its debt and cash figures, we leave it out rather than assume. Some industry labels — "Beverages (Production/Distribution)", for instance — cover both permissible and impermissible businesses, and those need a human ruling.
What are the ratio thresholds?
Interest-bearing debt below 33% of market capitalisation, and cash and equivalents below 33% of market capitalisation. These are the Dow Jones Islamic Market thresholds; AAOIFI uses the same 30-33% band.
Do I still owe purification on dividends?
Most likely, yes. Even a screened company usually earns some incidental interest, and the conventional remedy is to give away the corresponding share of your dividend. We cannot calculate that amount for you because we do not have the underlying income breakdown.
